Winding Down

The group at our Greek dinner

Just four days left in Berlin! Time has flown by, and it's not showing any signs of slowing down before I head back to the States. It's so bittersweet. I'm ready to see my family and friends, but I have fallen in love with this city, and I hate that I'm going to have to leave without any idea of when I might return. Berlin is incredible. I never thought I'd be able to love another place in this world as much as I love my Georgia home, but Berlin has definitely stolen a piece of my heart.

I'm sure when I get back to America I will experience a huge culture shock. I have gotten so used to the way things are in Berlin. It's going to be so weird being home and actually being able to understand what people are saying. It'll be weird ordering a meal at a restaurant and not having to worry that the waiter understood what I said. It'll be strange not having to walk everywhere. It'll be weird to ride in a car rather than a subway. People don't really ride bikes in America. I'm finally going to have air conditioning! When I ask for water I won't have to clarify that it needs to be still and with ice. I'll be able to eat my pizza with ranch dressing! And I'm sure I'll still be saying "danke" whenever I thank somebody.

But even though there are so many things that I miss about home and I'm so excited to have once I get back, I feel like those are the same things I'm going to miss so much about Germany. I actually like that I don't speak German. The challenge of communicating with people isn't a negative thing for me. I don't mind having to walk for miles every day. It's keeping me in shape. And I've gotten used to not having an AC unit. Also, the dogs here are so well-trained. My Charlie man has another thing coming to him when I get home. I'm going to straighten him up that's for sure.

Ahh, only four days! I don't even like to think about it. This has been an awesome experience, and I'm so thankful that I've had the opportunity to live in Berlin for the past month. I'll forever remember this trip.
